REPERTOIRE

The de Merc Chamber Choir prides itself on it’s wide-ranging repertoire characterised by  themed programmes  which include a rich diversity of style, chronology, geography, and familiarity.

Former Music Director Adrian Jolliffe was  a champion of neglected pieces by well-known composers,  some of which have not been performed for a century or more. For example, Stanford’s Bluebird is a concert fixture, but who would know that it is but one of a set of six including such gems as The Ink Bottle, The Witch, and The Train?

Through Adrian, the choir  maintained links with composers around the world like Hamilton in New Zealand and Sarah Manning in the States, often brought to his attention by guest singers, and their works freshen and enrich the choir’s repertoire as well as bringing them to what is often a first-time audience in the UK.

Adrian was an avid researcher of forgotten works by well-known composers obtaining obscure copies from the British Museum  or from the family archives, sometimes in manuscript form.

The concerts themselves are therefore full of interest and surprise for the singer and listener alike who can accept these pieces for the musical gems they are rather than as academic examples of unusual musicology.
